Though time refused to change its infinite ways, the boy’s body seemed to fly over the car’s bonnet at two different speeds.

To the victim, it was over in a flash: one second standing, the next his head lying precariously close to the car’s wheels. But to the driver, it took an age. The lad rolling up the polished hood of his silver Mondeo, coat and satchel heaving pressure on metal; shoulders, neck and head smacking the fragile windscreen before the car’s momentum sent the rag doll propelling beyond him and into the road. He saw it all as if someone had pressed a slow motion button and was controlling his life so the sickening moment could be played over and over again in his memories with crystal clarity...
